Abstract

This article analyzes the aesthetic and functional trends of design within "smart city" concepts, not as isolated phenomena, but as two symbiotic systems that complement one another. Is a city merely a collection of technologies, or is it a perceived environment that touches the daily lives of human beings? The essence of modern urban approaches unfolds against the backdrop of these fundamental questions. Research indicates that design in smart cities does not solely aim for visual appeal; it is intrinsically linked to factors such as comfort, accessibility, and sustainability. Whether it is the shaded path of a park or intuitive information panels in public transport, these represent the intersection where function transforms into aesthetics—a transition the inhabitant feels, even if they cannot always define it. Furthermore, the integration of digital technologies is reshaping the language of design. Sensors, data flows, and interactive surfaces are more than technical elements; they shape the "behavior" of the city. Notably, the more human-centric this behavior is, the more successful it becomes. The article emphasizes that without an aesthetic approach, functionality can appear cold and alienated. Conversely, aesthetic solutions lacking a functional foundation rapidly become obsolete and lead to user fatigue. Balance is the critical factor, and this equilibrium manifests differently in every city. Ultimately, a smart city "lives" through thoughtful design rather than technology alone. The smarter a city becomes, the more perceptibly human it must remain.
